For many elementary school children, same-gender relationships, such as best friends, are the first training grounds for intimate and loving relationships. This is not the same or even determinative of one’s sexual orientation. It simply means that the way we love and form healthy relationships should be the same regardless of gender. Learning that lesson early will help our kids build many healthy and happy relationships in the future.

Faith Development

Elementary-age children are growing in identification with faith tradition, community, and faith practices. By the middle of elementary school, most children can identify their Christian faith tradition and its distinctiveness from other major religions as well as significant denominational differences related to practices. Membership in a faith community is often articulated by the types of activities a child engages in, such as worship on Sundays as opposed to Fridays or Saturdays, Jesus as a central figure in their faith story, Communion at different times from others, worship styles, and particular messages. Often, elementary school children see these differences similar to family origin, affiliation with a sports team, or the neighborhood one lives in. Congregational and denominational affiliation for elementary children is an identifier based on concrete differences, not deep theological divides or competing truths.
